Manitoba Climate Resilience Training Webinar Series

This three-webinar series will take you through the adaptation planning journey using free tools and resources developed under the Manitoba Climate Resilience Training (MCRT) Program

Webinar Series Overview

In a changed and changing climate, how can communities in Manitoba prepare for climate-related hazards and protect their people, assets, and the ecosystems in and around their communities?

Delivered by the Government of Manitoba and hosted by ClimateWest, this three-webinar series will take you through the adaptation planning journey using free tools and resources developed under the Manitoba Climate Resilience Training (MCRT) Program. Gain the knowledge and skills to integrate climate considerations into planning and decision making which will help you prepare for hazards and take advantage of opportunities.

This free webinar series will provide participants with an overview of the current state of knowledge on climate change, and a better understanding of core concepts behind climate change adaptation. During the series, you will learn:

  • Where to find climate projections, how to use them to identify climate-related risks and vulnerabilities, and understand the implications for Manitoba’s local communities
  • How to conduct a climate vulnerability and risk assessment for your community
  • How science-based information and tools are being used for strategic adaptation planning
  • How to develop local adaptation strategies, plans, and actions that will reduce the impacts of a changing climate in your community
  • How to use the newly launched From Impacts to Actions Adaptation Planning Guides

These webinars will be delivered by the Climate Preparedness and Communications Branch of the Climate Action and Energy Innovation Division in the Department of Environment and Climate Change.

Climate Preparedness 101

Participants will explore core concepts including climate science terminology, the role of climate preparedness, the link between emissions reduction and resilience, as well as current climate forecasts, trends, and free tools to address the impacts of a changing climate on Manitoba’s local communities.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the basic concepts of climate science
  • Distinguish between weather, climate variability, and climate change
  • Understand current climate trends, regional impacts and the role of preparedness, long term resilience and emissions reduction

Participants will review how to use publicly-accessible guides and workbooks to conduct a thorough climate vulnerability and risk assessment (CVRA), enabling them to manage and reduce the risk and severity of climate hazards.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how to identify climate hazards to your communities
  • Learn how to best use climate forecasts in identifying climate vulnerabilities and risks
  • Recognize the cause-and-effect relationships between hazards, impacts and consequences to understand and prioritize the risks to your community
  • Become aware of tools like the Climate Atlas of Canada and Manitoba’s Municipal Climate Cards as part of the VRA process
